How Can A Video Be Effective To Show Your Passion For Your Community That Gives A Meaning To Your Restaurant.

Every day we hear about the bad economy in the news. People are cutting back on their spending. Sure enough it is having effect on restaurant businesses. At this difficult time when the restaurant seats seem to be empty there is a sense of panic and temptation to lower the price of the menu items to attract the customers. I personally feel that is not the right strategy to have price war with the chain restaurants. There is no way small restaurants can win the price war with the big chains like McDonald or Burger king. Therefore the small restaurants should focus on selling their product based on memorable experience. As a small restaurant you have a power to sell that intangible asset which cannot be touched but only felt. I believe that is more powerful than just trying to sell your food as a common commodity which a customer can buy from any restaurant.

So many small restaurants make a mistake of being in the restaurant business who think that they are there to sell the best food in the town. Truth of the matter is that they are actually in the people business where the focus should be selling the most memorable experience that they could cherish may be for the rest of their life. It should be a place where a couple can come back in their nineties and still remember their first date in that restaurant. This is an intangible asset that your restaurant should be selling. The food is a tangible asset that they might enjoy and remember only for a certain time.

Today to be successful in any business your focus should be customer centric which is very well displayed by the online retailer Amazon. Jeff Bezos, the founder of the company says that they are neither books retailer nor music cd retailer rather they are in the business of people. They want to provide the best customer experience online. No wonder amazon.com has done very well beyond pundit’s expectation. That’s why I strongly feel that restaurant should be not in the business of food rather in the business of people.

Chain restaurant have all the money and fancy buildings and multi million dollar decorations. There is no way that small restaurants can compete them with the money. One thing that you can set yourself apart is  by providing the best service possible and unforgettabe dining experience. This is where the plains are leveled. You have a chance in many cases to beat even the chain restaurants because you have a passion for your community and since you are there for a long haul you have an interest to do good for the community. Why don’t you get involved in the community to raise awareness to feed poor hungry kids , or represent a green revolution? You can do the simple things like avoiding non recyclable styrofoam and replacing with recyclable paper products to start off. These are just examples. You can be creative to do so many other things for your community and show really what you and your restaurant represent. Once you the community understand you and what your restaurant stands for, I don’t think you have to sell. I believe people will come to you and buy. That is the most powerful influncial effect that you and your restaurant can have over your customers than any flashy fake television advertisement.

Watch the video and see how powerful that message of hope and change is. It literally moves you from deep inside. It feels like it is calling upon you for hope and change. Can you and your restaurant capture that hope and change within your community. Can your deeds touch the hearts and minds of the people in your community? Capture the moments of hope and aspiration on the video and share them with the world. This can be much powerful than the flashy TV ad that the chain restaurant spent millions on.

What Can Your Restaurant Learn About Video Marketing From P. Diddy?

Watch the video of P. Diddy and see how he has used Youtube as a marketing tool which makes us think out of the box. He has taken old way of doing one to one interview to a different level by doing it in the form of video interactive media interview.

Well you might be thinking you don’t really need personal assistant like P. Diddy. Let me tell you what you might need. You might need a talented guy to make your restaurant video. Therefore I would suggest  you to use P. Diddy’s strategy to find a talented college student who could make your restaurant video ad for certain prize. You can announce the challenge as Free Meal For A Year or even better cash prizes for the best “Restaurant Video Ad Contest” winner. You should make it attractive enough so that there is maximum number of participants. Instead of paying huge amount of fee to the ad agency why don’t you pay  the same amount to the winner. This does two thing for your restaurant. It creates a buzz and excitement among all those college students and every one interested which helps you create your restaurant marketing campaign in itself. The ad for your restaurant turns out so creative and brilliant that it has a great quality and good taste which is in sync with the target market. As a result it fosters bond with your customers and create loyal fans around your restaurant brand which you were aiming for any way with the video ad.

Watch “Chipotle 30 seconds fame” video contest challenge. People were invited to submit their video created by themselves for a grand cash prize. Lots of college students participated and there were many videos submitted made by different people. The above video is an example of a video that came out of the contest. It is pretty good., ha ! The video shows the front store with it big letter sign board – Chipotle -Mexican Grill which creates a brand awareness. It is also funny that the guy despite the hair that he discovers in the buritto keeps on eating to display his love towards his favourite buritto. It is that good. I am sure you also can announce similar video contest and have your restaurant video created by your own customers. Wouldn’t that be cool to have your own customer win the video ad contest and also to have him or her in your restaurant video commercial.

How Eating Contest Can Be Creatively Used As Video Marketing To Create Your Restaurant Brand Awarness?

We have seen several hot dog eating contests on the television. It creates so much buzz and excitement to both the participants and spectators that it self turns out to be interactive marketing. I understand they had million dollars in advertising budget so they could buy time slots on television network.

As a small restaurant, with a little budget such television interactive marketing was out of reach. However with the rise of high-speed internet, online video has become a reality. This opens opportunity to even small restaurant to have their own version of Eating Challenge Contest that could be recorded on the video and hosted on You tube for free. The video then can be promoted not just in US but virtually to the  entire world. This is like having your own Hot Dog Contest on the television without having to pay huge advertising fee. You would be amaged to see how you could turn Youtube as a marketing tool for your restaurant that is more powerful than the television advertisement.

Watch the interview of the contestant before the Burrito Challenge. It becomes so interactive. I am sure he had told to all his friends at work about it and every one should have watched it. This strategy alone is viral  as it creates excitement considering the interactive nature of the contest. It keeps the viewers watch the video and comment back and forth about the video. In the process it makes an awareness of your restaurant brand deep in their mind.

Watch the live video of Chipotle- Mexican Grill where they make the 2 burritos for the customer creating some sort of Eating contest. If you notice the video it is recorded not by any professional video camera man. It must have been recorded by some of the staff there. The quality is still good enough to embed in your site or simply upload it in You tube. Now that you watched the video, I am sure you can create some sort of video in  your restaurant with your customers. The key is to make it interactive. It could be eating contest or as simple as testimonial about how the customer feels about the restaurant. You can then send the link of the uploaded You tube video to all the customers on your email list or even better send the message via Twitter. It would be instantly watched by lots of your customers who were following on Twitter. This provides another alternative affordable avenue to advertise your restaurant virtually for free.

How Small Restaurants Can Win Even Big Chain Restaurants.

At times some of you as a small restaurant owners might have felt hopeless when those big multi billion dollar chain restaurant pops up all over your back yard with different concepts. Obviously they have big money and resources. But you don’t really have to get intimidated with their size. Because it is not the size that matters any more in this internet information age. It is speed that counts. As we all know when it comes to speed it not the big guy who wins, it is normally the small guy who is fast that always wins. If
you look at those multi billion dollar chain company, you are right that they have all the money. But when it comes to implementing new marketing ideas, new strategies they are slow. The approval process of any program including marketing takes so long that it seems like their corporate Bureaucracy is pretty much like bureaucratic government. Even if they approve it after several months of going from one executive desk to another, the strategy might have been outdated or moved to another marketing strategy. So it becomes
like chasing after the new social media marketing strategies and by the time they catch up the market has moved on to another new marketing strategies. In this case small restaurant like yours where you make your own decision fast and implement it as soon as it is available you have an advantage over those big  chain restaurants. All you have to do is identify the tools and use it to your advantage.

There are several groups in Face book. Some of these group might be right from  your town or city. Join those groups. Make some connections with them. Introduce yourself to the group and post some special offer like free appetizer or free drinks to only the Face book group members.

Create your fan page and let them know that you have a fan page. Attract them by giving some free foods in the begining.Once they try your free appetizer or free drinks and that they like your food or your hospitality they might become a fan. They would in turn influence other people in the group to become a fan of your restaurant. There is no limit for the numbers of fans you can create. You could continue to create thousands of them. Twitter is becoming so popular now that it seems every one is in twitter. It is another powerful communication tool which allows you to communicate two ways with your customers back and forth at once in a real time basis in no more than 140 characters. That means your communication has to be short and more importantly be useful to them. For example you can send some special deals right before the lunch or dinner time. It could be as simple as 10% discounts to as attractive as buy one and get another for half price. The short messages can be sent in the form of mobile coupons on a real time to every customers that are following your restaurant on Twitter. They will get the special offer on their mobile devices like iPhone, Gphone or any other internet enabled mobile devices or even in a regular mobile phones in the form of text messages. No more emails to dig into their inboxes. If you use Twitter very creatively you can pull customers to
your restaurants with ease and style.

Master one of them and move on to the next. You will be amazed how powerful marketing tools they are.For few seconds you might be scratching your head in disbelief that all of them are FREE.

Finding new meaning to your restaurant business in crisis and redefining your marketing.

Why restaurant must have a meaning to their business?

One of the greatest marketers Seth Godin that I admire says that if you are not remarkable you are boring.Your product or service is average that no body finds it interesting enough to talk about. That is simple and harsh but it is true.

In the cut throat competitive restaurant business market if you can not differentiate your restaurant from the crowd then your restaurant is lost in the crowd. I believe every restaurant must  have a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) to stand out of the crowded restaurants. Your restaurant must have a unique product or service that separates you from the competitors. For example Subway’s USP is “Fresh Sandwich made right, in front of you at your sight.” It is simple and yet very powerful. No wonder they even beat McDonalds in terms of number of franchise growth. But I believe you have to go beyond just having unique selling proposition if you want to be a remarkable restaurant and not just an average. You have to define a meaning in your restaurant business if you want to be talked about. Especially if you want to be talked about in the social media like Twitter. That alone is more powerful than any advertising. I don’t call that advertising. I call it a public relation you could get from your act of finding the meaning to your restaurant. The cheesy ad  thrown at the face of the customers whether they like or not is not going to work anymore. I call those tv ads  a forced advertising. It is like forcing someone to eat who doesn’t have an appetite. It is more easy when customers comes to your restaurant when they like what you are doing in your community whether you are helping the poor kids in the community with after school education or feeding homeless during the Christmas. I believe as a restaurant business owner one has to be an ambassador of hope and aspiration to many in the community. The customers are naturally going to like the good work you are doing in the community and in the process the customers starts understanding you and the meaning of your restaurant business they will come to your place. You don’t even have to sell. They will buy from you. Do you see it is easy when some one comes to buy rather than trying to sell at their face through mass media like television?

Why restaurants have to adapt to the changes that is taking place in the modern technology age?

Today I come to know that Nortel – communication company filed for bankruptcy. It is sad but that’s what happen when the leaders of the company stay in their comfort zone and don’t foresee what changes are coming and don’t change to meet those needs. In today’s rapidly changing technological world, every business including your restaurant should be up to date with the trends and technology that is part of a restaurant industry. You have to see in the horizon what changes are coming and position yourself to take advantage of the change. If you are not prepared for the changes and offer the same old outdated product then it becomes obsolete and thus it makes your restaurant obsolete. I don’t care how long any business have been around. If you don’t move fast enough and change as per customers changing demands you are doomed to loose your business or falter very behind in the competition. I will give you very fine examples of this.

Do you remember when Blockbuster video was having a good time while collecting ridiculous amount of late fees. You rented the video for $2 and paid the late fee of $10. That was one of their business revenue models. I personally believe that was a wrong model. Though I find it fair to punish for late returns for some time but not forever. As a good meaningful company you will have to think about how you can help your customers by using technology or by any other innovations you can think of. As a leader of a company you have to put your customers first and profits second.

Then came along a smart entrepreneur who was fed up with late fees and started an online video rental company called Netflix with a great unique selling proposition “Never Late Fees “.That was so powerful that within few years it gained popularity and attracted thousands of online subscribers and still growing. Now Blockbuster Leaders relaxed in the high rise glass building didn’t have broader vision for their company let alone help their customers. But on the other hand one man was thinking about the frustrated video rental customers and building an innovative company. Today it is not about how big you are and how much money your company has. It is about how innovative your idea is. Today marketing is won not by just throwing dollars at great TV advertisement. If it was true then Block buster had millions of dollars to throw at those executives at those television networks. But it doesn’t work that way especially in this rapidly changing innovative world. Today small is big if you harness the power that internet has provided to small company like Netflix and possibly yours too. Never in the history was it possible that small company like Netflix who just got started could battle even the 800 pound gorilla Block buster who has been in business for years. It pretty much makes Blockbuster obsolete. Watch the video where the company is headed. It is reinvesting their capital in online instant access video. That is where the future is headed to. Who would want to go to video store when you could download the video right in your own computer? It is just because of internet. Internet has leveled the plain field of business. Internet doesn’t discriminate whether you were old or new company. It doesn’t care if you have money or not. Today with innovative idea and by harnessing the power of internet any company small or big can grow and be successful. May be your restaurant could harness the power of internet and be the next Netflix.

2 Ways Restaurant Can Increase Their Sales Even During The Economy DownTurn.

Now a days every where from television to radio we hear about how bad the economy is. Sure enough the economy is not at its best but still the business is being continued. It has not stopped the company from doing business. The question is if the company has restructured itself to deal with the slow economy and revamped their marketing strategy to wither the wave of bad economy. What I always believe is that the smart companies always innovate itself even during the crisis and become more efficient and stronger than ever before. In Chinese language crisis means danger and opportunity. So with recent economy’s context the bad economy being the crisis can be turned in to an opportunity by innovating your restaurant business into more efficient with more effective online marketing using several free social media tools available. All you have to do is see how your restaurant business can use some of the social media tools and have a great competitive advantage over your competitor and gain the business even during this kind of slow economy.

Right now some of the restaurant might have dine in and take out only. If you have more than one revenue stream that is great. I think as a restaurant you should have several revenue centers to be profitable. It makes more sense especially during the slow time when you don’t have much dine in customers.

2 ways your restaurant can increase your sales even during bad economy.

  1. By adding delivery service and using online automated ordering system.
  2. By adding catering service and promoting on youtube.com

By adding just a delivery service you created one center of revenue center. Let’s say if some body orders for an amount over $50 will be delivered with $5 fee. See now you have double gains here. First thing by just offering the delivery service you were able to sell that extra $50 and without it you would not have made that $50 and possibly many more of that $50 in sales. Secondly you also made $5 in delivery service fee. Well when you have one delivery then it might not make sense. But imagine over a time if you grow that to say 20 deliveries. Now suddenly you made $1000 in sales and on top of that you made $ 100 on delivery charge fee. Now you might be thinking it is too much work and you don’t have much people during the busy lunch or dinner time. Well this is where online tools comes for rescue. You can create online ordering system by having your menu online. You can use foodler.com and set your menu and online ordering system with them. It is free to have your menu on their site. They do the online marketing. However you pay only based upon how many sales you make. So it is a win-win proposition. You use the online ordering system and you pay only when you make the sales. Your return on investment is at least guaranteed. When customers order online from a remote location the order comes directly to your fax. You don’t even have to bother to sit on the phone for several minutes wasting your valuable time from busy lunch hour. With online order it is all automated. You don’t have to pick up the phone and several orders can be placed at once with out having to put those customers on hold for ever. If some customers call for delivery order or any kind of order all you do is direct them to online ordering site. The ordering process will be so easy and efficient.

Second thing that I see with most of the restaurant is that they don’t offer catering. I understand it is extra work. But if you do it right the pay off is worthwhile and more stable than the dine in business some time is not predicable. It is like hit or miss. But once you create another revenue center which is catering, it balances your dine in sales for the whole week incase it happens to be slow that day. Even $2000 or $5000 of extra cash per month would make a huge difference. I have seen some restaurants making extra $10,000 to $17000 and in some case even more depending upon the high or low volume restaurant. Again for the online ordering if you need it you can still use the foodler.com and they would include both catering and regular menu on the site. You might have another concern that how can I manage the delivery. In the beginning you or one of your managers can do it. Typically you might have one or two catering during the lunch time to begin with. When you start picking up the catering business then you could either hire another extra person for catering delivery/helper at the restaurant with your catering sales justification. If you are not inclined to hire just for delivery, then you could look for some local delivery companies that might one to do that job for you on demand basis. But the down part is that they want some percentage of the sales or certain fee. So you have to judge which route would be right for you.

Watch the video how Mexican Restaurant - Los Gringos Locos is smartly promoting their catering business on you tube video. Lets say some one is looking for Mexican catering service around Los Angeles area. Upon watching the above video on You tube who do you think would that person choose. Obviously the normal choice would be Los Gringos Locos. They have visual display of their product and service and more importantly it has social validation by those satisfied customers. That alone is powerful and persuasive enough for anyone to go with them especially when you have that 120 % guarantee. Try to take some idea from the Mexican Restraurant – Los Gingos. One of the smart thing you can do is buy You tube pay per click advertisement. You can start with as less as $20 or $100.You control the marketing budget. You only pay when some potential client clicks the video. The interesting thing is that the ad will cost you may be couple of cents per click and if that customer orders lets say just $1000 for one catering order you made $500 solid profit as the profit margin in catering is typically 50 % or sometimes even more. Can you imagine the return on investment you are getting out of this You tube video advertising. Apply some of these strategies and techniques and you will see how you can battle even the toughest economy.

There was a report on CNN that one of the jewelers did a special promotion to boost their holiday sales. If I remember correctly it was something like this- the promotion would run for certain days. The customer could participate in the promotion by buying the jewelries and the jewelries would be free if there was snow fall on the last day of the promotion or on certain day. It was like a raffle. Buy Jewelries and Win a chance to get it for free if you happen to be lucky and that it snowed on that particular day. Consequently with that creative promotion they were able to make more sales than ever even during the down economy. The point behind this story is that if you use creative marketing ideas that are effective and affordable then your restaurant business should be able to you’re your product in the form of dine in, delivery or catering even during the down market and virtually make your restaurant business a recession proof.

Urban Spoon- Adding Your Restaurant In Urban Spoon Might Help iPhone Users Find Your Restaurant.

I am sure some of you have seen the ad of iPhone on the television. But among all the adds, one that caught my eyes was about the mobile application known as Urban Spoon on iPhone. If you haven’t seen the ad, please watch the video above and you will know what I am talking about. Basically it promotes how iPhone with such powerful mobile application can make our life much simpler and easier while we are in dilemma about which restaurant to go for dinner or lunch.

So the question is what is Urban Spoon?

Urban Spoon as advertised on iPhone ad, essentially is a mobile application on iPhone which helps iPhone mobile customers to find out which restaurant to visit while they are in confusion which restaurant to visit whether it is for
lunch or dinner. Since Urban Spoon also has online presence, it is a tool that small or big restaurants can leverage for their online presence and more importantly mobile presence.

Why adding your restaurant on Urban Spoon might help mobile customers find your restaurant easily?

As adding your restaurant on Google map is important for your restaurant to be found on search engines, adding your restaurant on Urban Spoon is important so that your restaurant can be found by those iPhone users and possibly by other internet access mobile users. Since the number of iPhone sold till the last year in 2008 was over 13 million and growing every day in States and other several countries, the traffic that you
could possibly generate from this can not be neglected.

Mobile Ad- What Is A Mobile Ad ? Why It Is Important For Restaurants To Get Their Mobile Ad on Mobile Devices like Iphone or Gphone?

Have you ever been to a new city and wanted to try some popular restaurant. Chances are that you might have asked the concierge for the recommendation. You had to do that because you didn’t want to turn those fat Yellow Pages which you know for sure some of the information is outdated already. Things change so fast in this information age it is scary that by the time the phonebook gets printed and land on your hand, the phone number of the restaurant is already changed or even worst the restaurant has gone out of business. So people don’t trust Yellow Pages Phone book for the up-to-date information. At least I don’t do. It’s been years I have never turned the Yellow Pages for any local information. Rather I would  turn on my computer and go  online direct for the up to date information.

Now that I have iPhone with internet access all the time I don’t even have to turn on the computer. I go to mobile internet browser and search anything I want on the Google – mobile version. I get the information with few clicks. Lately even Google has introduced  its iPhone version of internet enabled mobile device called Anroid in collaboration with Tmobile.

If you were in a new city say New York, suddenly hungry and had a craving for Italian food then all you would had to do in your internet access mobile device, is type Italian Restaurant and Manhattan -the name of the place where you were assuming you were in Manhattan .It would display all the Italian Restaurants around Manhattan. Then you could decide which restaurant would be the nearest to you and good choice based on the ratings if they had one. You would call the restaurant with one click and made a reservation and then go for dinner well informed about that particular restaurant. It would be that easy without having to search for Yellow Pages in New York crowded city.

Now the question would be how would that particular Italian restaurant appear in the mobile device like iPhone or Gphone ?

The simple answer is that the restaurant owner is smart enough to understand the importance of mobile marketing especially in a busy city like NewYork and had incorporated Mobile Ad with his Google Ad word account.

So the next question would be what is a Mobile Ad?

Mobile Ad is another small screen ad that you can control to appear in mobile devices like iPhone and Gphone. Mobile Ad can be solely created for Mobile devices too. At times the desk top ad can be made to appear in mobile devices too. The ad can also be made to appear in both platforms-desk top and  mobile device. It can be controlled from your Ad word account the central point where you choose the key words for your target market. For example if you were a Mexican Restaurant in Long Island, New York, you would choose Mexican Restaurant and Long Island, New York as your keyword to attract the people who were typing that word on their iPhone or Gphone.

Why it is important to incorporate Mobile Ad in your restaurant marketing effort?

In today’s fast paced world every body seems to have mobile phones. To be precise there are more than 3 billion mobile phone users world wide, even more than the computer users. That’s lots of traffic out there that you could tap into and turn some of those potential customers into loyal customers for your restaurant. Mobile Phone has become inseparable part of our body. It moves along with the mobile phone users where ever they move. So it makes logic for the restaurant owners to target their attention through the mobile device which is always with them. The fact that Google has launched the Mobile Ad reflects the increasing trend of mobile ad that is getting popular. Watch the video where Alexandra Kenin,Product Marketing Manager for Google mobile ads, talks about the new option for AdWords advertisers to show their desktop ads on iPhone and Gphone.

It has been more important than ever before for restaurants to get into mobile marketing and have a competitive advantage over your competitors if you want to survive in this mobile age of marketing.

Chipotle Mobile Ordering -How Mobile Ordering Application On iPhone Will Help Solve The Epidemics Of Long Waiting Line At Chipotle During Lunch Time.

I am sure you have been to Chipotle-Mexican Grill if not similar restaurant where the lines were so long during the lunch time that you had to wait for 10 minutes or even more just to get your lunch.

This  has been epidemics for years in restaurant industry. We see these long waiting lines during lunch time not only at  Chipotle but almost all the popular restaurants in the whole Untied States. With only 30-45 minutes of lunch break time it makes it more worst. As every office workers to executives from all type of corporations head to their popular restaurants, their half of the lunch break is over as they have to wait in a long line to get their food.

So how is Chipotle using mobile ordering application on iPhone to solve the problem of long waiting lines ?

Technology and innovation has helped solve lots of our modern age problem of speed and efficiency. This time iPhone has been a great open platform for mobile application like Chipotle Mobile Ordering which is the starting point of solving the epidemics of long waiting line at the restaurant by enabling the customer to order through their iPhone or iPod touch before they leave their office. The food will be ready for pick up or dine in through express lane which would take no more than 20-30 seconds.

The customer would come with their text confirmation code. He or she would show it to the cashier and once verified they are good to go. It would be that convenient, easy, simple and more importantly that fast. No more waiting in the line. No more fumbling the change at the cash register counter. It is like going through the invisible line. The poor guy in the long waiting line who doesn’t have a clue about this mobile ordering might be shocked and little bit annoyed to see you coming straight to the counter and zoop you are gone without even sliding your credit card. Well, don’t worry, he will figure it out later…

The Chipotle Mobile Ordering has been just released as a mobile application on iPhone though the restaurant also has an online ordering available through desktop or laptop. The Chipotle Mobile Ordering system allows iPhone users and iPod touch users to place their favourite burrito, nachos, quesadilla or salads with few clicks on their magic mobile device. It will also allow them to save their favourites on their mobile ordering profile for future orders. It has a built in payment system where you can pay with your credit card. I wish you could even pay with your pay pal or itune account. Once your payment is processed you get the order confirmation. When you reach the store, go straight to the pay counter and all you do is show confirmation code. You get your burrito in your hand faster than the time it would take to flash your credit card. Well that is what I would call food delivered with convenience and faster speed.

I am sure this service will be a great blessing for many of us especially who have limited  lunch break time. I will definitely download it today and will try to use it as soon as I can just to see how effectively it works. I will let you know about my experience with Chipotle Mobile Ordering. In the mean time if you have tried this already or if you are in the process of trying this service please do share your thoughts on this by leaving comments. Thanks.
