Why You Should Integrate Video While Marketing Your Restaurant To Attract Potential New Customers

In the video Mark Sinclair talks about eCommerce future trends in US. In 2006 alone, $168 billion was spent and is expected to grow to $280 billion by 2011. When we talk about eCommerce we are not just talking about amazon.com or  ebay.com but also restaurants that do business online. Pizza restaurants are famous for their online ordering. The transaction occurs on the web and now on mobile too with the rise of smart phones like iPhone. Have you cashed in some of those digital money?

If your answer is NO then it might be time to rethink about your restaurant business strategy. To really cash in online and on mobile one has to think of a new business model, get equipped with new set of online tools and learn new online marketing techniques.

Why Video?

Video is a trend that is getting popular with the rise of Youtube.Video is becoming an integral part of the business. The speed of the internet is getting faster and continues to do so.The technology has matured enough now that enables even a real time live video streaming. Why not create some sort of Chef Emeril kind of show?

Below are some of the reasons that I believe you should integrate video marketing.

More personal- When you use video, as a restaurant owner or chef you connect with your customers in a more personal way. Let’s face it when you have multiple restaurants there is no way you can possibly meet each and every customers. So in such a situation, you can leverage video by making personal message, sending greetings and thanking them for the business

Powerful Medium to sway your customer’s decision- Now a days we can access Youtube videos on iPhone and possibly in many other smart phones in the future. When you have your restaurant’s video displaying the dishes being prepared by the chef it becomes appealing to the customer on the road searching for your type of restaurant. Don’t you think you would have a better chance of swaying his or her  decision to dine with you?

Indexed by Google-The video that you uploaded on Youtube, blog or Facebook Page would be indexed by Google. That means when people search online on Google, your restaurant’s video can be on the top search results.Since most of the people don’t bother to make video you have a chance to stand out in the crowd.

Recommendation

If you are interested then I would suggest you to get Kodak video recorder. Though in the past I have recommended Flip video recorder I have come to know from Pete Kane that Flip doesn’t have a strong mic to effectively record the voice. So give a try to Kodak video recorder. You can find them at Office Max or other similar Office supply stores near your city or town.

Why not record some videos of your main popular entrees showing your chef’s acrobatic skills ? You could also record a video tutorial of how to make the best salsa in the world. I’m just giving you an example. So when people are searching for recipe for salsa your site has a chance to be on the first to be discovered.

I think video is another powerful tool that helps your restaurant to be found by your potential new customers in the internet. What do you think about using video to market your restaurant? Do you think it is worth the time for restaurant owners or chefs to devote some time to create some videos and upload it online on sites like Youtube?

Restaurant Video Marketing-Using You Tube, How Dunkin Donut Created Effective Marketing Even During The Slow Economy That is Powerful Than Superbowl Ad.

I have to admit that I admire how Dunkin Donut does their marketing so effectively bringing the humanly feelings side of marketing despite the fact that it is a big corporate. Big Corporate for me in most cases is not associated with relationship building. They are still hung up on old industrial age mass media marketing.

When I watched the video, there were couple of things that I liked about it that is worth mentioning.McCall Gosselin, Communications Manager of Dunkin Donut understands the relationship marketing and has integrated that aspect in the video marketing campaign. First of all it is not some sort of cheesy ad that your eyes ball are accustomed to which you desperately want to flip the channel. Though the video is to promote their Dunkin Donut brand, they are not doing it  like some of the other restaurant brand does like say “hey we have the best steak, come and try us.” In my opinion no body cares about the best steak. All people cares is if it solves their problem. So the video is going with that approach to begin with. Instead of saying we have the best coffee than Starbucks or McDonald’s, they are saying ” Hey customers we understand that economy is hurting you, so as a gesture of your loyalty for the good times, we want to extend our hand by giving you Free train ride and also a chance to win Free train ride and Free Coffee for the whole year of 2009. There are four aspects in this video marketing that resonates with the loyal customers . They are as follows:

  1. Relationship Building- Engaging with them
  2. Sense of Caring – Giving away a free one year train ride and Coffee
  3. Entertaining – By bringing in Peter Ostrum-”Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory” Actor
  4. Inspiring people even during the Low times
  • Relationship Building- Engaging with them-Dunkin Donut marketing team has gone to the Boston’s South station where their  customers are. That is the place where every morning all of their customers commute sometimes with a cup of Dunkin Donut coffee in their hand. They go right there and engage them by educating them about the Free train ride and Free coffee for the whole year of 2009 and also giving away free train rides right then and there. They are talking to the customers building a rapport and relationship.
  • Sense of Caring – Giving away a free one year train ride and Coffee - The fact that they are giving away the free train ride right then and there and also a chance to win Free train ride and Free coffee for the whole year of 2009, shows that Dunkin Donut do care about their customers even during the bad times. It is a gesture of extending hand for the loyalty that they showed to Dunkin Donut during the good times. I think this is the most powerful marketing than the short lived multi million dollar Super Bowl Ad on the television.
  • Entertaining – By bringing in Peter Ostrum of the 1971 film “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory”. Dunkin Donut is entertaining its customers by providing an opportunity to interact with Peter Ostrum and re kindle their old memory and at the same time bringing fun and joy even during the bad economic times. It is a small thing but it does matter. The customers were delighted to receive Charlie cards and ” Gold en Ticket”. How cool is that to see in person and receive from Peter Ostrum who you have admired from your child hood.
  • Inspiring people even during the Low times- It is also inspiring for the people to see that Dunkin Donut is on their side even during the low times. The fact that their campaign says “You Kin’ Do It” stresses that they support their  customers  be it good time or bad time.  The other message that I feel that they are giving is that despite the Economic Down-turn, keep your heads up, strive to succeed, be creative and you will find your way. That’s why Dunkin Donut says, “You Kin’ Do It”

Restaurant Superbowl Advertisement-Why Denny’s Superbowl Ad Is So Brilliant And How Did It Attract The Hungry Customers From Tv Screen To Their Restaurant Floor.

Some of you may have watched the Superbowl Ad during the game intervals. Among many of the popular ads, one of the ad that grabbed my attention was Denny’s Restaurant Ad. Since I blog about Restaurant Marketing it is natural to gravitate towards restaurant ads to see how effectively they have managed their return on their millions of dollar Tv advertisement investment.

To my surprise, Denny’s Restaurant has brilliantly crafted this tv advertisement. With tv viewers less attention time span and the fact that their ad got not much of a time on the Superbowl ,they managed to grab the attention of many by offering Free Grand Slam breakfast for February 3rd, 2009 which is today. Remember the Superbowl was two days ago on Sunday February 1st of 2009. So right after two days, the memory of the ad is still fresh in many peoples mind. The breakfast offer is back to back just after two days. The marketing seems to follow well planned sequences.

How did Denny’s well planned marketing worked out so well in sequence by engaging them on the Tv screen and then attracting to their restaurant floor.

The other thing that I noticed today is that early in the morning I started getting twitter feeds about Free Grand Slam Denny’s breakfast. People were tweeting that they were going for free breakfast at Denny’s.  On the Tv ,Fox channel was giving a coverage about Denny’s Free Grand Slam breakfast. The host were interviewing some of the customers. I feel this is a great free public relation that the restaurant Denny’s got from the television network like Fox and possibly many more.I then made a brief tweet about Denny’s Free Grand Slam breakfast to my followers via my twitter account. I thought it would be useful to those who would like to have some free breakfast especially during economic down turn and more importantly to share the brilliance of this restaurant marketing.During the morning I searched for Denny’s in Twitter and found out so many buzz about the Free Grand Slam breakfast. It was funny that there was one guy who was frustrated with long waiting line in the DMV left for breakfast at the nearby Denny’s. I am sure there were many who were sharing the great Free breakfast offer  with others via twitter or other communication tools. This was spreading like wild fire. Wow! I believe that it was a great viral marketing.

The catch about this marketing is that the offer  was available only today for a  limited time from 6am to 2pm. So this created urgency for the customers if they wanted to take advantage of this offer. Though they might have lost some money on the breakfast they could have offset some of the  loss by offering some other suggestive selling once customers came to the restaurant. But clearly Denny’s strategy was a long term. They were willing to take short term loss to earn long term gain. They were making a clever effort to engage with as many customers as possible to remind them about their brand. They were giving a test drive for their tasty Grand Slam breakfast to many and some of them I believe who might have never tried one. This provided another opportunity to introduce their menu to new potential future customers and also remind the existing customers about their popular  breakfast.

I thought this was a great marketing effort by Denny’s restaurant especially during this economy downturn. What do you think about this marketing? Please do share your thoughts on this by commenting below.

Marketing Pizza During Superbowl-How Can You Market Your Restaurant Like The Big Restaurant Chains Without Spending Millions.

We have Superbowl going on today. Everybody is going to be at home watching the game. Lots of people will be ordering pizzas and wings from the local pizza restaurants. Last year, Pizza hut alone sold over a million of pizzas. Papa johns and Dominos sold little less than Pizza hut but the number of pizzas sold by the pizza chains just in few hours on that particular day blows our mind. It is natural that they have big pockets so they can offer to throw millions at the television networks and get their commercials run during the Superbowl.

Well for the small independent Pizzerias and other small restaurants, getting commercials at Superbowl might not be at their reach. But have you thought how you can take advantage of the event -Superbowl and have your guerrilla marketing work for your local pizzerias or any other restaurants. If you are smart you don’t really have to spend millions but can pull a great video marketing virtually for free or very low cost.

Watch the previous video of Papa Johns and find out how Papa Johns has been creative in taking advantage of the events like Superbowl. They understand that lots of people will be making their own predictions about the game. They also know that many of them will be ordering pizzas and wings online at the comfort of their living room sofas. They put a commercial announcing their contest and requesting the Tv viewers to submit their predictions to win the Papa Johns wings. This does two things. Papa Johns will create excitement during the game and in the process will gain potential customers contact info who are interested in the contest. Who ever wins after the game, they will offer their wings as they promised. More importantly, the second thing that it does for Papa Johns is that it gives them an opportunity to engage with the potential customers and persuade them to order Pizzas or wings by providing some incentives or deals. With out their email or mobile phone numbers that they acquire during the process of registration there would be no way for Papa Johns to target directly for the sales. Now they have competitive advantage over their competitors. Now think for your self. You are watching the game. Papa Johns gives you a deal on your pizza purchase there is no way that you would not take it. Because you are going to buy pizza any way from one of the pizza place. But now you are more attracted to Papa Johns because there is something in it for you. That is some price discounts or meal deal where they provide you everything from pizzas, wings, bread sticks to drinks all in one low reasonable price.I am sure you would choose Papa Johns instead of other Pizza chains that didn’t provide you any sort of deals.

Same thing applies to your customers. So the question is have you thought of any prediction contest or any other sort of competitions where you engage your customers online. If you are not then you are missing a whole lot. It is not that difficult as you might think. You can simply start by announcing some sort of prediction contest with your in house customers if you had their email addresses. If not then you could simply make a video announcing about the contest and the details and how they can participate in the contest.  Now you don’t have that kind of money to run those ad on tv network like Papa Johns. However you could buy sponsored video advertising which you could get it for few cents per click through You Tube. Remember that people are ordering pizzas online so they will be with their laptops or internet enabled mobile devices. So that means you have an opportunity to attract them via online whether it is on Youtube or through Google Local search. Follow the similar strategies of Papa Johns. You can create your own contest like lets say ” Predict the winning team and get the wings for free” But make it conditional like for the first 50 or 100 people. This will do two things. It will create urgency for the online viewers to register for the contest as early as possible. That way you will get even more than 100 entries. May be 1000 or even million who knows. Second thing you will only have to give away limited chicken wings. Take that as your advertisement investments. Instead of wasting it on newspapers or radio why don’t you give that to your own customers. They would be happy and more importantly you would get so many business from that that 50 or 100 chicken wings-free give away that it would turn not as an expense rather an investment.

Restaurant Video Marketing-What Can Your Restaurant Learn About Video Marketing From Dunkin Donuts.

Dunkin Donuts is one of my favourite coffee place where I often visit to enjoy my  coffee may be more than Starbucks. Having  interest in marketing I gravitate towards Dunkin Donuts because it embraces the new emerging technology and use it early on to stay ahead of the competition. One of the cool previous marketing video that I liked was the one with  Rachel Ray as their main PR on their website.  That was powerful.

Now this time they are taking full advantage of Free video sharing site-You Tube. As news released last year in 2008 by Quick Service Restaurant Magazine,Dunkin Donuts had launched a Dunkin Donuts brand channel on You Tube, that allows people to upload, watch and share the videos created by their own loyal customers.

Dunkin Donuts invited it’s customers from all around the United States to create and share the videos on You Tube. The theme was “How Do You Keep America Running” The Video Talent Contest went on up to  March 1st of 2008. A pannel of judges evaluated the submitted videos and chose 50 winners who received a year’s supply of Dunkin Donuts cofee. The other top 10 videos are featured in their You Tube channel as you can see it at www.youtube.com/dunkindonuts

Watch the video that was the winner of the Dunkin Donuts video talent contest. The video looks very professional and also reflects the true representation of a loyal fan who loves Dunkin Donuts. All the top 10 videos have been archived  in their You Tube Dunkin Donuts brand  channel.

I would highly recommend  you to use the same strategy to get user generated restaurant video. How cool it is to have your restaurant video created by your own customer. User generated video can be fun and true to what your customer think about your restaurant brand than an ad agency trying to fake the restaurant video ad. Also I would recommend to create your own restaurant brand channel in You Tube.

Restaurants Can Have Their Own Tv Show Like Chef Emeril Live Without Paying A Dime To The Tv Network.

Any body interested in Food Tv network, especially chefs, culinary professional, restaurant owners the food tv network popular show Chef Emeril Live is not a new thing for them. It has been admired by so many people who loves not only the food but the process of preparing too.

I am sure there are so many talented chefs like him around United States and around the world. They have all the skills to present a show like Chef Emeril Live. But the problem was that the television media was out of reach to the small restaurants and the chefs no matter how talented they were.  Due to the high cost there was a entry barrier problem. But with the birth of social video sharing site like Youtube the equation has been changed.

This is a good news for all the small independent restaurants with talented chefs. YouTube is now available on Sony Bravia TVs via the Bravia Internet Video Link service. Christine Tsai, product marketing manager for YouTube syndication had announced this good news mid of last year in 2008 and displayed YouTube interactive online video experience on Sony Bravia Tv. Recently YouTube have announced that it is on the beta test. Virtually this will give you a chance to create your own  food tv network channel where you can host your own version of Chef Emeril Live show. The difference is that since this is your own own tv network, you will have only your restaurant chef’s show and will never have to pay a single dime to the television network.

How can you do this with out having to pay a single dime to the television network?

I am sure every one has a handy camera nowadays. If not I would recommend Flip Video Camera which you can buy at $129. All you have to do is create your own tv show like Emeril Live. Try to be creative and show how to make some of your signature item dishes or any thing you think is appropriate. Upload it to Youtube where you can host the videos for free. If you don’t have an account, you can create an Youtube account by visiting at http://www.youtube.com/signup?next=/index

Shoot series of videos and create your own channel in Youtube or even at your website and start promoting to your loyal customers and spread the words out to every one you think would be interested. You can also be creative and create a Kitchen Talent contest inviting some of the local chefs or interested restaurant customers. This has two purposes. One it will create excitement on the show itself. Two it will encourage people to log into your website or Youtube channel you created and watch it on the Sony Bravia Tv because they want to see themselves on the tv. Chances are that they are going to email that video links to their friends and relatives, cousins and you name it just to show that they are on tv. Well any body would like to show off when they are on tv.There you go you have your own Tv show may be even better than Emeril Live. Who knows. Go for it and let me know how it went.

How Can A Video Be Effective To Show Your Passion For Your Community That Gives A Meaning To Your Restaurant.

Every day we hear about the bad economy in the news. People are cutting back on their spending. Sure enough it is having effect on restaurant businesses. At this difficult time when the restaurant seats seem to be empty there is a sense of panic and temptation to lower the price of the menu items to attract the customers. I personally feel that is not the right strategy to have price war with the chain restaurants. There is no way small restaurants can win the price war with the big chains like McDonald or Burger king. Therefore the small restaurants should focus on selling their product based on memorable experience. As a small restaurant you have a power to sell that intangible asset which cannot be touched but only felt. I believe that is more powerful than just trying to sell your food as a common commodity which a customer can buy from any restaurant.

So many small restaurants make a mistake of being in the restaurant business who think that they are there to sell the best food in the town. Truth of the matter is that they are actually in the people business where the focus should be selling the most memorable experience that they could cherish may be for the rest of their life. It should be a place where a couple can come back in their nineties and still remember their first date in that restaurant. This is an intangible asset that your restaurant should be selling. The food is a tangible asset that they might enjoy and remember only for a certain time.

Today to be successful in any business your focus should be customer centric which is very well displayed by the online retailer Amazon. Jeff Bezos, the founder of the company says that they are neither books retailer nor music cd retailer rather they are in the business of people. They want to provide the best customer experience online. No wonder amazon.com has done very well beyond pundit’s expectation. That’s why I strongly feel that restaurant should be not in the business of food rather in the business of people.

Chain restaurant have all the money and fancy buildings and multi million dollar decorations. There is no way that small restaurants can compete them with the money. One thing that you can set yourself apart is  by providing the best service possible and unforgettabe dining experience. This is where the plains are leveled. You have a chance in many cases to beat even the chain restaurants because you have a passion for your community and since you are there for a long haul you have an interest to do good for the community. Why don’t you get involved in the community to raise awareness to feed poor hungry kids , or represent a green revolution? You can do the simple things like avoiding non recyclable styrofoam and replacing with recyclable paper products to start off. These are just examples. You can be creative to do so many other things for your community and show really what you and your restaurant represent. Once you the community understand you and what your restaurant stands for, I don’t think you have to sell. I believe people will come to you and buy. That is the most powerful influncial effect that you and your restaurant can have over your customers than any flashy fake television advertisement.

Watch the video and see how powerful that message of hope and change is. It literally moves you from deep inside. It feels like it is calling upon you for hope and change. Can you and your restaurant capture that hope and change within your community. Can your deeds touch the hearts and minds of the people in your community? Capture the moments of hope and aspiration on the video and share them with the world. This can be much powerful than the flashy TV ad that the chain restaurant spent millions on.

How Eating Contest Can Be Creatively Used As Video Marketing To Create Your Restaurant Brand Awarness?

We have seen several hot dog eating contests on the television. It creates so much buzz and excitement to both the participants and spectators that it self turns out to be interactive marketing. I understand they had million dollars in advertising budget so they could buy time slots on television network.

As a small restaurant, with a little budget such television interactive marketing was out of reach. However with the rise of high-speed internet, online video has become a reality. This opens opportunity to even small restaurant to have their own version of Eating Challenge Contest that could be recorded on the video and hosted on You tube for free. The video then can be promoted not just in US but virtually to the  entire world. This is like having your own Hot Dog Contest on the television without having to pay huge advertising fee. You would be amaged to see how you could turn Youtube as a marketing tool for your restaurant that is more powerful than the television advertisement.

Watch the interview of the contestant before the Burrito Challenge. It becomes so interactive. I am sure he had told to all his friends at work about it and every one should have watched it. This strategy alone is viral  as it creates excitement considering the interactive nature of the contest. It keeps the viewers watch the video and comment back and forth about the video. In the process it makes an awareness of your restaurant brand deep in their mind.

Watch the live video of Chipotle- Mexican Grill where they make the 2 burritos for the customer creating some sort of Eating contest. If you notice the video it is recorded not by any professional video camera man. It must have been recorded by some of the staff there. The quality is still good enough to embed in your site or simply upload it in You tube. Now that you watched the video, I am sure you can create some sort of video in  your restaurant with your customers. The key is to make it interactive. It could be eating contest or as simple as testimonial about how the customer feels about the restaurant. You can then send the link of the uploaded You tube video to all the customers on your email list or even better send the message via Twitter. It would be instantly watched by lots of your customers who were following on Twitter. This provides another alternative affordable avenue to advertise your restaurant virtually for free.

Flip Video Camera-Making Your Restaurant Video Marketing Easy And Simple

Now when we talk about video marketing you might have thought that those are only for big chain restaurants who can offer big bucks to those television networks. No doubt, you are right about that until the internet and site like Youtube was born. Internet technology has been so revolutionary that now even small restaurant can make their own videos and promote it through video sharing sites like Youtube  using simple video camera called Flip Video Camera.

So what is Flip Video Camera?

Flip Video Camera is a simple, thin, pocket size video camcorder which unlike other regular video camera,  is easy to record and upload the video into your computer or directly on the video sharing site like Youtube without having to deal much with technology.

You might be thinking that you will need to hire professionals to shoot the video just to spend money for nothing. Infact you yourself or any body at your restaurant can shoot the video. If you can get the vacation video or even the plain photos then you are can definitely shoot the video for your own restaurant. Be creative and take different angle shots and you will look like a professional video recorder.

For those who have their personal Sony or other branded  video camcorder, you can use it. However you will have to deal with one or two more steps before you could transfer the video to your camera or the video sharing site like Youtube. I would highly recommend you to get the Flip Video Camera whether you currently have  or you don’t have it at all. They are not that expensive rather  cheaper  than the regular branded video camera. The cost of the Flip Video Camera is only around $ 129. You can buy it through sites like amazon.com or ebay.com or even from a local Wal-Mart or Office depot.

Watch the video to find out how simple the Flip Video Camera  is and easy it is to record the video of your own restaurant. It shows you an overview of its features to give you an idea how you can make best use of them.

Flip video camera is so popular because it is easy and simple to use. You don’t need to deal with all those software and technology issue. It is plug and play. It has a USB drive that comes attached to it. The beauty about it is that once you take the video shots of your restaurant, you can directly upload it to Youtube. Best of all the hosting of the restaurant video is free at Youtube. You then can embed the video into your website or if you don’t have a website you can promote it via email or even through Youtube.com video sharing site.

You can even start promoting your video through Youtube. You are now empowered to start your own video marketing campaign. The best part is that you no more need lots of money for television advertisement which was  out of reach to small restaurants. Now you can do it for as little as $100 or even less depending upon how aggressively you want to promote. The key thing is that at least you have a control over the money you spent on video marketing that is more effective than television advertisement in my opinion. The video marketing that you do at Youtube will be trackable and measurable. You can track exactly how many people are interested at your restaurant video by the numbers of clicks in your video. You also can measure if the campaign is succeful or not by the number of new customers that you brought in with the video marketing. If you do it with creatively the return on investment would definitely surpass the amount that you would put on the video marketing campaign.

Since the Flip video camera has made it so simple for any one to take the video. There is no excuse for any restauranteurs to not make their own video and upload it to Youtube. More importantly to present your restaurant in more professional way and to stand out of other average restaurants.

Video Marketing-What Is A Restaurant Video Marketing ?

What Is  Restaurant Video Marketing ?

Restaurant Video Marketing is a process of marketing your restaurant by using online video content that would help  persuade new potential customers to try your restaurant product or service and thus ultimately help create  your restaurant brand awareness .

The key here though is viral video which is natural, funny and sometime can be little sexy which attracts even the most conservative eye balls. The idea is to make it contagious that it spreads like a viral to everyone. One person watches the video, he finds it funny and send it to all his group of friends and their friends send it to all their friends. This keeps continuing until it will have snow ball roll effect just to realize that over million people have downloaded the video to watch it in last 24 hours. Now that is very powerful. It is more powerful than the traditional mass media restaurant television advertisement.

Your restaurant video can be a simple one where you can display your entire restaurant from the kitchen to the seating area and not to forget the famous chef preparing live, the most popular dishes with his acrobatic skills. If you can add may be similar touch of “BAM” like the one on the Emeril Food TV network show it might create even more excitement to the viewers or it  could be a simple video with a touch of a funny and may be  sexy element  which I will leave up to you to decide.

Watch the video of Carl’s Jr. commercial to get an idea what makes a video viral. There are certain elements that are included in the commercial that  makes it go viral. First thing it is little funny especially at the end. Second it has a beautiful lady which attracts even the most conservative eyes. Thirdly the video has been successful in evoking the emotion with the viewers. When online viewers see the guy enjoying succulent, juicy, hot ” Jalapeno Chicken Sandwich ” despite tears it  has definitely helped causing an emotional response to try the Jalapeno Chicken Sandwich” right away. The other important  part of this video marketing  is viral effect made easy . It has made so easy for the viewer to share with his or her friends with just few clicks. That’s what make it spread like a contagious virus.
